Fed: Anderson rejects Beazley talk on bush
CANBERRA, Feb 14 AAP - National Party Leader John Anderson today defended his record
in government following days of attack from Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, who is touring
rural areas.
Mr Beazley has hammered the theme that the Coalition is not listening to the people,
even to its own traditional constituency in rural Australia.
On day two of a four-day bus trip through northern New South Wales yesterday, Mr Beazley
portrayed the government as rattled and in disarray.
Mr Anderson today hit back, saying the National Party was delivering services to rural
and regional Australians at a pace a million miles ahead of Labor.
"No honest examination of my record or the National Party's record would support those
attacks," he told AAP.
"The fact is that we have delivered far more than Labor ever did, that we have been
very active partners in government.
"Whether it's helping to get inflation and interest rates down, whether it's local
road funding, whether it's rural services, whether it's rural health, the fact is that
we have delivered big time and we will continue to deliver big time."
Mr Anderson rejected Labor's claims that the Nationals were being cowards in Canberra
when it came to standing up against the government's policy of selling off all of Telstra,
once fully government-owned.
"That's just rubbish," Mr Anderson said.
"Who was it? It was us who insisted that the issue of country services be faced.
"We've said all along that our priority is to get country people the services they
need at the prices they need at the reliability they need.
"Labor never did any such thing. We never saw this sort of stuff from Labor.
"We put it out to tender and we got a quality result, a quality offer driven by competitive
forces.
"That is a million miles in front of anything Labor ever did."
